When people are going through a divorce, two major points of contention often tend to be property division and child custody. Former NFL football star Kordell Stewart recently finalized his divorce from Porsha Williams, a star on a popular reality television show. At the same time he was going through that divorce, he was also battling it out with his 9-year-old son's mother over custody of the child. In the most recent event, the former football player was able to come to an agreement with the boy's mother.
In 2011, Stewart filed papers to get custody of his son after he found out that the boy's mother was planning a move to California. On January 28 of this year, a joint custody agreement was reached that gives Stewart primary physical custody of the child with the right to make final decisions about the child's care. This is despite the fact that the boy's mother claims that Stewart hardly ever saw the child.
As part of the child custody agreement, the boy and his mother can speak on the phone at reasonable times. Neither Stewart nor the boy's mother will have to pay child support. The judge also forbade either parent from having non-prescription narcotics or illegal drugs around the child.
The football star also ended up with a favorable outcome in his divorce from Porsha Williams. He got to keep all the property that was in his name.
Going through family law battles is hard enough for people who aren't in the public eye. For Stewart, having both cases come to a close is probably a huge relief. Anyone who has child custody issues should make sure to get their questions answered prior to signing documents or going to court to make sure that their interests are properly protected.
