Choosing The Right Approach For You Integrity and Commitment to Client Service

What does supervised visitation mean for me?

Dealing with a custody order that includes supervised visitation can be difficult for both parents and the children, but there are some things you can do to make the experience as stress free as possible. Having an attorney who is familiar with your situation can also ensure you have someone to consult on any issues or questions that arise throughout the process.

Supervised visitation can be a dramatic change for parents who are used to interacting with their children alone. It can be awkward for the children as well, and it's normal for both you and them to have questions about the process. It may take a while for everyone to become accustomed to the new situation, but ensuring you are familiar with the terms of your court order, making sure you are on time for all scheduled visits and keeping the focus on the children during visits can help.

For parents who are dealing with an ex who has supervised visits with the children, it can be a relief to know that the children will be safe during the parenting time, but it also comes with its own unique set of challenges. You will likely have to deal with many questions from your children, including some you feel uncomfortable answering. It's best to be as truthful and age-appropriate as possible and make sure your children know you are there for them if they need you.

It's also important for both parents to do everything they can to create and maintain a civil working relationship for the sake of the children. Even during these difficult times, the best interests of the children should be the most important thing and the focus of both parents.
